YOGA & THOUGHT CONTROL

Rene Descartes sat on the table,contemplated for a while & wrote something which Humanity will remember till its stay on the Earth,

In the last post ‘THOUGHT’,I tried to stress on a point that we relate with everything & everyone on the planet through our Thoughts.The restless nature of Mind keeps on generating thoughts & hence we are unable to realize Atman or our true self.The ego-sense
identifies itself with the Mind & its thoughts & says “I’m the reality”.It is as if a small electric bulb would say “I’m the electric current”.Nevertheless,the current still flows through the bulb just as the Atman that resides always within a living being.

Yoga aims at the control of thought waves in the Mind.Thought waves are of two kinds-one that is painful & other that is not painful.A painful wave is that which brings with it increased sense of Ignorance,bondage & addiction.A wave can be said to be ‘not painful’ provided it impels Mind towards greater Knowledge & Freedom.

Thought waves cannot be all controlled at once.Yoga gives us a two fold process.In the first phase ,we have to overcome the ‘painful’ thought waves by raising waves which are not painful.Thoughts of anger,desire & delusion must be opposed by thoughts of Love,generosity & truth.Only when the painful waves have been completely stilled,one can move on to the second phase:stilling of ‘not painful’ waves.The stilling of thought waves of Love may at first seem shocking to us,but we must remember that the world even in its most beautiful appearance is superficial & transient.It is not the reality.Imagine a ladder hung up to reach to a mountain top.Although we use the ladder to climb to the top,but at the final step we have to leave or transcend the ladder in order to place ourselves at the top.Similarly,we use the mind first to generate thoughts of love & ultimately we transcend our Mind & ego in order to realize the Atman or pure Consciousness.

Meditation is the primary instrument to control our Mind & still the waves of Thought.It is of utmost importance.Mediation is a skill just like playing a Guitar.Acquiring a skill involves ‘Practice’,which needs to be defined here.Practice is the repeated effort to  follow a discipline.It becomes firmly grounded when it has been cultivated for a long time,without interruption & with earnest devotion.

When we have realized the true nature of the soul,we would be able to separate true reality-Atman from the apparent which is non-Atman.
